Travelling and exploring new destinations is fun and fulfulling but at times can be daunting to get around. Thanks to the smart phone today this task can be done much more easily. We have compiled the top 5 apps that we use during our travels and would highly recommend them to you.
We were extremely glad to have been introduced to this app when we moved to London by our taxi driver and since then we haven’t looked back!
From walking directions to real time public transport routes for planning journeys, this has been our #1 go to app during our travels in and around Europe. It also has fare estimates and links directly to Uber and local taxi apps. The best thing is set the trip details when you have wifi and it still works offline on the trip.
The app supports most major cities in Europe and is expanding to other parts of the world. This is a must for any traveller.
One of the best taxi service apps out there, this service has saved us time and money. Available almost in all major cities, the convenience of this service is unparalleled.
In some cities, it can be more cheaper and efficient to take an uber instead of the public transport if you have more than 2 people in a group. Our experience has been that uber drivers tend to be very friendly and helpful and their cars are very clean.
We highly recommend this app and service.
This app is a no brainer. Even though we use citymapper to get from point to point, in most of our travel destinations we are usually left without a data connection when on the go. This is where the offline function of the app shines!
When connected to wifi just download the map to offline and you can use the app freely without a data connection on the go.
The download area can be as large as a whole city. Just search for the city you want to download, zoom out, clear the search field and click on the ‘download a new offline area’.
Viber (Viber Out)
There is a plethora of text and voice chat apps that everyone uses, but we particularly like the Viber Out feature of Viber.
The Viber Out feature uses your wifi / data connection to make calls to local and international landline and mobile numbers. Even though the app to app call and messaging functions are free, to use the Viber Out feature you’ll need put a minimum of $1.
Just load a few dollars on your account via the app and you’re good to go. Call costs are as low as 3c a minute! Perfect for making a call whilst avoiding the horrendous roaming call costs.
We particularly use this feature to make calls to hotels and restaurants to make/confirm bookings etc.
From the basic hello and thank you to full sentence translations, this app has been extremely useful to us during our travels. The live translate feature using the camera on the phone has been particularly useful for translating menus in restaurants and cafes.
The recently introduced offline translation with downloadable language packs is just another great feature of this great app.
